King vs California King: Dimensions and Bedding Fit
A standard King reference is 76 × 80 inches; California King is 72 × 84. California King is four inches longer but four inches narrower—not larger in every direction. Their fitted sheets are not interchangeable by size name because their corner locations differ. Compare the mattress footprint and covered depth with the exact sheet’s intended fit before buying.
[1] Casper · King is referenced at 76 × 80 inches and California King at 72 × 84 inches. Nominal mattress footprints; measure the particular mattress.
Calculation basis: 72 − 76 = −4 inches of width; 84 − 80 = +4 inches of length. A fitted rectangle cannot be substituted solely because the two names contain King.

| Item | King | California King |

| Main dimensional trade-off | 4 in more width | 4 in more length |
[1] Casper · King is referenced at 76 × 80 inches and California King at 72 × 84 inches. Nominal mattress footprints; measure the particular mattress.
Calculation basis: 76 × 80 = 6,080; 72 × 84 = 6,048. Divide by 144 for square feet: 42.22 and 42.00 respectively; the area difference is 32 square inches, about 0.53% of King area.
Calculation basis: Multiply inches by 2.54. Four inches is 10.16 cm; linear and area measurements remain distinct.
The overlay uses the same scale and origin for both mattresses, so the difference is not hidden by resizing each picture to fill its own box. The solid King outline extends farther sideways. The dashed California King outline extends farther toward the foot. Neither shape contains the other in both directions.
Calculation basis: 72 − 76 = −4 inches of width; 84 − 80 = +4 inches of length. A fitted rectangle cannot be substituted solely because the two names contain King.
Similar area does not mean the same shape
King actually has slightly more top-surface area: 6,080 versus 6,048 square inches. That 32-square-inch difference is small compared with either total, but it does not erase the four-inch differences in width and length. Area is one product of two measurements; two rectangles can have nearly equal area while placing their corners in different locations.
Calculation basis: 76 × 80 = 6,080; 72 × 84 = 6,048. Divide by 144 for square feet: 42.22 and 42.00 respectively; the area difference is 32 square inches, about 0.53% of King area.
Think about which direction you want space rather than asking which name sounds larger. King provides more side-to-side width. California King gives more head-to-foot length. Those are physical dimensions, not promises about sleep quality, posture or which size a particular person will prefer. Try the space and consider the frame you will actually use.
Hypothetical example: A mattress-only room comparison
- Room:
- 144 × 144 in
- Placement:
- Mattress centered sideways, head edge at the wall
- King leaves (144 − 76) ÷ 2 = 34 inches on each side and 144 − 80 = 64 inches beyond the foot.
- California King leaves (144 − 72) ÷ 2 = 36 inches on each side and 144 − 84 = 60 inches beyond the foot.
- A frame, headboard, furniture and door swings must be measured separately and reduce usable space.
California King gains 2 inches at each side in this placement but uses 4 more inches of room length. These are geometry estimates, not clearance or accessibility standards.
An area figure cannot tell you whether a dresser drawer opens or a door clears the bed. Sketch the outer frame footprint, then place doors, furniture and your chosen walking space around it. Avoid treating mattress-only leftover space as a guaranteed usable aisle. There is no universal room-size threshold established by this example.
Why the fitted sheets are not interchangeable
A fitted sheet wraps around four corners. A King footprint has corners spaced for a wider, shorter rectangle than California King. Moving a sheet from one to the other changes both axes: an ordinary King is four inches short in the California King’s length direction while adding four inches across its width. Rotating it does not produce a 72 × 84 rectangle.
Calculation basis: 72 − 76 = −4 inches of width; 84 − 80 = +4 inches of length. A fitted rectangle cannot be substituted solely because the two names contain King.
Brooklinen’s chart makes the distinction visible by listing King fitted sheets at 76 × 80 × 16 inches and Cali King fitted sheets at 72 × 84 × 16 inches. These are attributed product examples only. Their listed depth does not tell you Abeero Home’s supported depth or authorize a cross-size substitution.

Deeper pockets address a different dimension. They do not, by themselves, turn a shorter mattress footprint into a longer one. Similarly, elastic construction or a loose-looking corner is not documentation that a product supports both sizes. Only use a dual-size product when its manufacturer explicitly documents the relevant footprint and covered-depth range.

Flat sheets can share dimensions without sharing fitted fit
A flat sheet drapes over the bed rather than locating four fitted corners. Brooklinen lists 110 × 104 inches for both King and Cali King flat sheets. That does not contradict its separate fitted-sheet sizes: a flat rectangle can be offered for multiple mattress names, while its overhang and foot allocation differ on each bed.
[2] Brooklinen · Brooklinen lists the same 110 × 104-inch flat sheet for King and Cali King. Shared flat dimensions do not make the fitted sheets interchangeable.
For that 110-inch example width, centered top-edge overhang is (110 − 76) ÷ 2 = 17 inches per side on King and (110 − 72) ÷ 2 = 19 inches on California King. These are not remaining tuck measurements: mattress depth must be covered too. A flat sheet fitting your preferences does not prove that the fitted sheet bundled with it is compatible.
Make the bedding decision from measurements
Before changing King sizes
- Measure the actual mattress width and length; keep King and California King separate.
- Measure covered depth including topper, pad and protector contributions.
- Use the outside frame dimensions when considering room space.
- Check the exact fitted product’s intended footprint and supported depth.
- Check flat-sheet dimensions and pillowcase contents independently; do not transfer one item’s compatibility to the whole set.
Use the comparison tool for the footprint trade-off, then the fit checker for the sheet decision. This keeps two questions separate: which mattress geometry suits your space, and which documented product fits the mattress you have. A nearest size label is useful context, not purchasing consent or a fit guarantee.
Put this into practice
- Compare both mattress footprints at the same scale
See the width, length and area differences without conflating a longer bed with a wider one.
- Check your chosen sheet against the actual mattress
Compare measured footprint and covered depth with documented intended-fit limits for the exact product.
Common questions
Is California King bigger than King?
It is longer, not wider: 72 × 84 inches versus 76 × 80. King has slightly more area, while California King has four more inches of length.

Can I use a King fitted sheet on California King?
Do not substitute by name. The width and length differ in opposite directions. Only rely on a product explicitly documented to support your actual footprint and depth.
Calculation basis: 72 − 76 = −4 inches of width; 84 − 80 = +4 inches of length. A fitted rectangle cannot be substituted solely because the two names contain King.
Will extra-deep pockets solve the footprint difference?
Not by themselves. Depth is a separate axis from width and length; a deeper seam does not document compatibility with a longer mattress.
Why do some flat sheets say King/California King?
A manufacturer may offer one flat rectangle for both. Brooklinen’s chart lists 110 × 104 inches for both sizes, while listing distinct fitted-sheet dimensions.

Which gives more side clearance in the same room?
With equal placement and mattress-only geometry, the narrower California King leaves four more inches total across the room. Actual clearance depends on the frame, furniture and doors, not the mattress name.
